This is what my first step out of the ship looked like in Dominica! We couldn’t have arrived at more perfect time. It had just stopped raining and sky’s were clearing up for some sun! Setting foot in Dominica really reminded me Hawaii in a lot of ways; the weather, being surrounded by mountains, the abundance of green, the ocean, the island lifestyle.
We arrived in Dominica on a Sunday. There was absolutely no one out on the streets! It was like a ghost town because everyone was at church, but it gave me a lot of time to see the basic structure of the town and a truly unspoken observation of the Dominican culture.
After wandering the town with some of my friends, we decided to check out the botanical garden that turned out to be more of a park. Little did we know that these steps would lead us to the most amazing view of town!
Tadaaa! The top of the botanical garden was once used as a fort where they would launch cannons down to their enemies. It was a beautiful view of the town, some of Dominica’s most cherished mountaintops, and my floating home.
Walking back to town, we heard such beautiful singing. It turned out to be a Baptist church service and the locals insisted that we come take a look.
I stumbled across this mural while walking around town and it really stood out to me as a symbol of how I saw the Dominican culture. Vibrant, full of character, united with one another and with people from all walks of life. In my opinion, Dominica really has built a culture of peace. Although I was there for only two days, I have never seen such a culture that gets along with one another so well. It was something that is so foreign to most of us, but so natural to the Dominican people.
Walking back to my room to get ready for snorkeling! I took lots of photos of the champagne reef bubbles and fish, but unfortunately my underwater camera broke ☹.
I was so lucky to get to go to the southern part of Dominica to Scotts Head. I went during the late afternoon close of sunset which is my favorite time of day to be outdoors. It was such a calm and gorgeous place. I begged the driver to stop so I could take a photo of the entire bay, it was absolutely breathtaking!
This right here is what my friends and I came for! Scotts Head boasts the most incredible sunsets and were so lucky to arrive just in time for it!
The southern part of Dominica is a fishing village.
Here’s me with room mate Sarah, and my friend Luis, we were freezing felt like we had just gone swimming but still stoked that we made it to the falls!
It was so hard getting a picture of the waterfall because it was pouring and the waterfall was so massive and close that it’s mist drenching us in even more water! So I didn’t really get great shots of the falls, but it was incredible!
cool pictures syd! post more! :)
